小谷ぼろ織り Boro-weaving in Otari
裂いた布を織り上げる「ぼろ織り」。
かつての生活必需品は、
時代の流れとともに何度も消滅の危機を迎えました。
しかしその度に、「ぼろ織り」に興味を持った女性と、
後世に残したいと考えた女性が出会い、今日まで受け継がれてきました。
変わらない技術を大切に、
小谷村の空気や時代の流れの中で、
小谷村の「ぼろ織り」は日々変化しています。
“Boro-weaving” is a weaving technique using rags.
Once the necessities of life has been nearly disappeared with the time goes by.
Nevertheless, it has been barely handed down through the encounters of women who want to preserve and women who want to inherit.
Valuing unchanged techniques, feeling the atmosphere of Otari village and the trend of the time, “Boro-weaving” is developing day by day.
ぼろ織りができるまで How to make “Boro-weaving”
整経 せいけい Warping
経糸（たていと）の長さと幅を決める作業。
目的の織物のデザインを考えて経糸の色を選び、必要な本数の経糸を整経台にかけます。
Process of determining the length and width of the warp (lengthwise yarn).
Select the color of the warp considering the design of the fabric, then place the required number of warp yarns at the warping frame.
荿通し おさとおし Sleying the reed
筬は、機の上で経糸を打ち込む道具のこと。
この筬の一目一目に、筬通しという道具を使って経糸を通します。
A reed is part of a loom, used to push the weft yarn securely into place.
Sleying is done by inserting a reed hook through the reed, hooking the warp threads.
巻き取り まきとり Warping
経糸をちきりに巻き取ります。巻き取り方が織りの出来を左右するので、
大切な作業です。
The yarns are wound on a warp beam, which looks like a huge spool. It is an important process which influences the weaving.
糸綜絖作り いとそうこうづくり Threading the heddles
巻き取りが終わったら、経糸に綜絖（経糸を上下に開く仕掛け）用の糸を一本ずつ通します。小谷村では、糸綜絖を使うことが伝統として受け継がれています。
Once the rolling is done, the yarn is threaded into the heddle (gimmick to open the warp up and down) one by one. In Otari village, the string heddles have been used traditionally.
織る おる Weaving
糸の準備が出来たら、いよいよ織りの作業です。
経糸との相性を見ながら、裂いた綿の布を緯糸（よこいと）として織り上げていきます。
Once the preparation is done, finally the weaving process begins.
While looking at the compatibility with the warp, insert the cotton rag as the weft (transverse thread).
縫う ぬう Sewing
織り上げた生地は、ミシンを使ってポーチやバッグといった商品に仕上げます。
商品としての価値を高めるため、技術を必要とする重要な作業です。
Woven fabrics are finished using a sewing machine as products such as pouches or bags. In order to increase commodity value, it is an important process that requires technics.
